Broadway star and Tony award-winning actress Linda Lavin died on Dec. 29, PEOPLE confirmed. She was 87.

The actress “passed unexpectedly due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer,” her representative told PEOPLE.

Lavin, rose to prominence back in the ’70s for starring in the TV series Alice, following a stint as a guest star on Barney Miller.

The actress returned to Broadway in the ‘80s and won a Tony in 1987, while continuing to appear on TV and in film. She continued to work in the following decades and had been promoting her new Netflix series No Good Deed and filming for her upcoming Hulu series Mid-Century Modern before her death.
